With Students Back to In-Person Learning, Improved Michigan School Bus Laws Work to Keep Passengers Safe

October 19, 2021

Just in time for National Bus Safety Week, which will be observed this year from October 18-22, Michigan has introduced new laws related to school buses. The laws, which went into effect on October 11, address safety for passengers both inside and outside the school bus.

The first law allows school buses to install cameras on the exterior of the buses to identify drivers who illegally pass buses when their red stop lights are activated. During a one-day survey in May 2019, 1,373 participating bus drivers reported 508 instances where motorists illegally passed school buses. With this new law, camera footage can be turned over to the police to issue violations to careless drivers captured on camera. Those who violate this law are subject to a fine of up to $500.

The second law is aimed at preventing unauthorized personnel from entering the school bus. According to this new law, an unauthorized individual who enters the bus is subject to a civil infraction of up to $500. And yes, unauthorized personnel includes parents, unless they have explicit permission from the school to enter. Under this law, school buses are permitted to put a sticker on the bus stating the following: “An unauthorized person attempting to board or boarding this school bus is subject to citation for a civil infraction and may be ordered to pay a civil fine of not more than $500.00.”

These changes will ensure students and bus drivers that utilize school district transportation systems are safer for all. When you see a bus, drive as if your own children are on it and proceed with caution.
