Matthew McCann

Matthew McCann is senior appellate counsel at the law office of Moss & Colella, P.C. He has been practicing law since admission to the State Bar of New York in 2006 and is also admitted to practice in the State of Michigan, the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern District of Michigan, Eastern District of New York, and Southern District of New York, and the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. He has litigated cases involving civil rights, negligence, and environmental torts, as well a host of business disputes and criminal and administrative law matters. Over the last twenty years, Matthew has been active in professional, political, and civic activities, and has focused significant personal effort on helping special needs students in and out of the courtroom and classroom.

Matthew is an experienced litigator in civil rights, special education, negligence matters, environmental torts and business disputes.  Following law school, he was a Law Clerk for a two-year term at the Second Circuit Court of Appeals’ Staff Attorney’s Office, where he drafted bench memoranda to the judges in advance of decision and also helped draft Orders & Decisions.  Drawing on that early experience, throughout his career in the private sector, he has been called upon to do significant appellate work in state and federal courts, as well as before administrative agencies, in tribunals throughout the country.  In addition to civil litigation, Matthew has also handled significant criminal defense representations as well as SEC and FINRA investigations and proceedings.

Matthew received a Juris Doctorate from Brooklyn Law School in 2005. He was a member of the Journal of Law & Policy and served as a Primary Notes & Comments Editor. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University, where he majored in Policy Analysis & Management with a concentration in Family & Social Welfare Policy in the College of Human Ecology.

Matthew and his wife are the parents to two wonderful boys and one rescue dog. They relocated from New York to Michigan in 2021. His younger son has significant special needs which has spurred his professional and personal dedication to the needs of special education students and their families. Matthew’s hobbies include reading, crossword puzzles, meditation, and helping run Michigan’s premier battle rap league based in Metro Detroit.  He has also had the opportunity to coach both of his sons’ sports teams, including Rolling Thunder Special Needs Program, one of the first inclusive running clubs in the USA for all athletes dedicated to providing challenged individuals with the opportunity to successfully take part in all levels of mainstream running, walking, or wheelchair racing. Matthew has held leadership positions in the City Bar of New York and the Nassau County Bar Association, and is currently a member of the Michigan Bar Association.
